What is it with these women

Spoilers for "The Daredevil in the Mold"

Of course Hannah wasn't going to accept Booth's proposal because she's "not the marrying kind." But she's just the latest in a long line of female characters on Bones who, far from seeking commitment from the men in their lives, seem determined to avoid such entanglements. There's Brennan herself, of course, and Cam, at least in the past, and Angela, who only decided to accept Hodgins' proposal when he backed off and made it about being with him just one day at a time. And then on my main show, there's Cameron, who was written as a commitmentphobe from Day 1, freaked out when her friends-with-benefits arrangement became too serious, barely made it to the altar with Chase, and then fled her marriage within a year.

My question as an infrequent tv watcher is, are these shows unusual in their portrayal of independent professional women spurning the offers of devoted males, or is this a current trend? And if so, does it reflect a reality of which I am largely unaware, or is this an insidious fantasy created by Hollywood writers in an attempt to justify the reluctance of modern males to step up and commit (a sort of "She wouldn't want that anyway" argument).

Hmm, that's interesting. My strong impression was that these women did not *want* to marry their partners, so they were not "waiting" for anyone to propose. And I can easily imagine Cameron or Sam (or Brennan, Hannah, or Angela from Bones - heck, Angela kind of did, in the end) proposing to a man if she *did* want to marry him, rather than being constrained by tradition.

I also have gotten the impression that in the US, at least in professional circles, most couples decide together to get married. (One of my friends proposed to her husband.) But maybe my sample is skewed.
