Barcelona vs. Malaga

Many of Barcelona's most experienced players were resting on the bench after Wednesday's clash with Real Madrid, but not Leo Messi - and thank goodness for that since he scored 3 of our 4 goals. The first was a powerful header off a high cross, the other two his trademark high-velocity dribbles past a bunch of defenders. It was wonderful to see him in top form again - I don't know if he'd been under the weather, unhappy, or just out of shape from the holiday season, but he'd been playing pretty passively for the past couple of weeks, and today the difference was obvious. He was constantly on the move and scanning his surroundings for opportunities, and the childlike joy that always seems to accompany his best games was definitely in evidence!

Hats off also to Victor Valdes, who made a couple of incredible saves, even if he did concede one goal to the home team. Much as I adore Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina, I think that VV has proven to be a consistently great goalkeeper and should be trusted to fill their shoes on the Spain NT.

And finally, kudos to Malaga for putting up a good fight in the best sense of the word, making as many attempts on goal as they could but not attempting to maim any of the Barcelona players. Unlike a certain other team that shall remain nameless.

He's much older now, and side to side I can see the differences more, but I'm glad you can see it.
