If you're happy, I'm....

Quick thought on rewatching House M.D. 5X05 "Lucky Thirteen"

House is jealous because he thinks that Wilson is dating (and, okay, financially supporting) a prostitute. And he's jealous because Cuddy is buying baby furniture after successfully applying to be a candidate adoptive parent.

That's right. Emotionally, he's Wilson's boyfriend but Cuddy's child. And this only becomes clearer in this and subsequent seasons.

How smart you are! Thanks for the idea! Really clever observation.

*smile* I'm probably not the first to notice this. But it was the first time that I noticed.

And Wilson and Cuddy seem to agree with this.

Yes. Too bad that neither of them remembers to act accordingly in S6.

Wow. Excellent observation. :) Makes me want to either rewatch this episode, find fic for it, or both.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this episode - I'd forgotten how great the pranking scenes were in this, with House so delighted to have Wilson back in his (sabotaged) desk chair and Wilson hilariously rewarding House's attempts to spy on him.

Here's a fic from that episode: Double Blind, by blackmare. As usual, she writes House and Wilson both so well you can see them standing in front of you.

There were times in S5 when it nearly seemed as if they were setting up a weird kind of almost-triangle: Cuddy wanted House but wasn't willing to admit to it; House wanted Wilson, who wasn't about to see it; and Wilson didn't know what the hell he wanted.

I really wish they had explored that in a better fashion than they ended up doing.

I'm looking forward to watching the rest of S5 from a H/W perspective.

I'd forgotten there was so much good stuff in this one! And Double Blind...I hadn't read that in far too long.

Me too! I think the first time I watched this, pre-online fandom, I didn't really "get" what House and Wilson were up to and found their prank war kind of bizarre. Now that I understand the way their friendship works, it makes perfect sense and is truly adorable.

Absolutely true. :) There is another episode where Wilson or maybe it is Cuddy says something like "your'e just unhappy because mommy doesn't have as much time for you now that she has a new baby" (paraphrasing).

I definitely think that House has been searching for maternal (read: unconditional) love. Someone who would protect him in a way that his mother did not from the abuse of the world. He pretended he didn't believe in it (as a self preservation device) but deep down he hoped thought that Cuddy would be it. But she wasn't and that might be why he is melting down so much.

Wilson is his best match in the way that he completes him. They are complementary personalities, filling in for eachother where the other lacks and usually bringing the best parts forward. The sexual component could be there, but it doesn't have to be, and they still fit that way.

I wish that the show's writers would explore this more (directly).

ITA. They're a couple, with or without a sexual component.

Yeah, I've always looked at it that way, that emotionally he's much more dependent on Wilson. Even after they broke up, House didn't stalk Cuddy the way he stalks Wilson. Remember the ep from Season 6 where House is determined to find out why Wilson is eating healthy?

"Damn! I knew the fake works was too much."

Well, I'm sure that some would say that House responded to the break-up with a week of drugs, booze, and hookers precisely because he had been more emotionally dependent on her.

But I'm with you. And

"Damn! I knew the fake works was too much."

SO MUCH LOVE FOR WILSON HERE.

As a forty-plus-year-old you really don't want to date a child.
Sadly, I have found this to be true.

As for the emotional dependency, who's to say that breaking loose from one's parents isn't as harrowing an experience as losing one's girlfriend?

Excellent point!

My ideal scenario has always been one where Wilson, Cuddy and House become housemates; Cuddy gets help with Rachel, House gets a bit of mothering and Wilson gets to be needed by everyone.

Had to smile at the "Wilson gets to be needed by everyone," because it's so true.
