Hat tricks from Argentina and Spain

Switzerland 1: 3 Lionel Messi Argentina

Despite his incredible success playing for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi has made it abundantly clear that he will not feel truly accomplished until he leads his national team to victory in a major international tournament. And although he is adored all over the world, he has gotten a ton of flak from his native country for failing to do just that. Yesterday he scored a hat trick in Argentina's friendly match against Switzerland. I'm sure that he was thrilled, but for me it only highlighted how hard it would be for him to take his team to the next level. The defense played well, but without Leo as team captain, playmaker, and striker, I doubt that Argentina would have scored any goals at all.

Spain 5 : 0 Venezuela

I couldn't help feeling sorry for Venezuela in this match. Once Andres Iniesta scored the first goal and David Silva the second, it was pretty much over. But that didn't stop Roberto Soldado from scoring a hat trick during his debut for the national team. Hard to believe that Real Madrid let this guy go! Interestingly, Soldado replaced David Villa at Valencia when Villa transferred to Barcelona after his own phenomenal success with the Spain NT. Looks like the same thing might happen here, even if Villa's broken leg heals in time for him to be called up for the Euro Cup this summer.
